About the Belgian Laekenois: Belgium's Rare, Rough-Coated Herder

👑

Royal Laeken Roots & Queen Marie-Henriette

🏛️ 1891 Heritage · 2020 AKC
🏰 Royal Castle of Laeken👑 Queen Marie-Henriette🐑 Native Flock Guardian💎 Rarest Belgian Variety

The Belgian Laekenois (pronounced roughly "LAY-ken-wah") is one of the four Belgian shepherd breeds. In the late 1800s, Belgium had many types of native herding dogs. In 1891, breed enthusiasts and veterinary professor Adolphe Reul helped sort them into four types by coat and color. The Laekenois is the rough-coated type and takes its name from Laeken, the royal district near Brussels that is home to the Royal Castle of Laeken. The breed is commonly said to have been favored there by Queen Marie-Henriette. Farmers kept these dogs to herd sheep and guard the farm. The Laekenois has always been the rarest of the four, with far fewer dogs than the Malinois, Tervuren and Groenendael. In Europe the four are usually treated as varieties of one breed, the Belgian Shepherd. The AKC recognizes each as its own breed, and it recognized the Belgian Laekenois in 2020 in the Herding Group.

About 22–26 inches tall and roughly 45–65 lbs, with a square, athletic, medium-to-large build and a light, elegant way of moving. The signature feature is the rough, tousled, wiry, dry-textured coat, around two to three inches long. The color is reddish-fawn with black shading, mainly on the muzzle and tail, and the coat gives the face a slightly shaggy, scruffy look. Ears are upright and triangular. The coat is low-fuss but needs regular brushing and occasional trimming.

4 Tips for Naming Your Belgian Laekenois

⚡

1. Keep it short and crisp

One or two syllables with a clear sound are easiest for a fast, responsive herding dog to catch, even at full speed. If you love a royal name like Leopold, shorten it to a nickname like Leo for everyday use.

🧠

2. Plan for the sharp, sensitive mind

Laekenois are intelligent, driven and sensitive, so choose a name you can say in a happy, steady voice and pair it with consistent, positive, reward-based training from puppyhood.

🚫

3. Avoid names that sound like commands

Names like 'Kit' (sit) or 'Beau' (no) can confuse training for a dog that reads every word closely.

⏳

4. Test it for a week

Call the name in the yard, at the park and at home. If you choose a French or Belgian name, practice the pronunciation so everyone says it the same way. A Laekenois that snaps to attention with bright eyes has found the right name.
