About the Dogo Argentino: Argentina's Snow-White Big-Game Hunter

The Dogo Argentino was developed in Córdoba, Argentina, starting in the 1920s by Dr. Antonio Nores Martínez, whose brother Agustín later helped continue the work. The foundation was the old Cordoba Fighting Dog, crossed with several other breeds, including the Great Dane, Boxer, Bull Terrier, Pointer, Irish Wolfhound and Dogue de Bordeaux. The goal was a brave, athletic pack hunter that could take on big game such as wild boar and puma, and still be a loyal, stable family companion. The breed was recognized by the FCI in 1964 as Argentina's national breed, and the AKC recognized it in 2020 (Working Group).

Nicknamed "Dogo," "Argentine Mastiff" and "Argentinian Mastiff," these dogs stand about 24–26.5 inches tall and weigh roughly 80–100 lbs. The short, smooth coat is solid white, and a single dark patch around one eye is allowed. The build is muscular and athletic, with a broad chest, strong neck, powerful jaws and a deep, confident stride.

Dogos are loyal, brave, protective and affectionate with their own family, with a calm, confident presence. Dogos were bred to hunt in packs, so they have a high prey drive and can be pushy with other dogs. They need experienced owners, early socialization, firm and consistent positive training and plenty of exercise. Because of their power, some countries and cities restrict the breed, so check local rules before getting one.

How Do You Name a Dogo Argentino? Start With Argentina and the Hunt

Naming a Dogo Argentino invites you to draw directly from the breed's extraordinary heritage across four natural directions:

  • Argentine places, culture and Spanish names: Celebrate the vast pampas, Patagonia, the soaring Andes, tango music, and rugged gaucho life with evocative names like Pampa, Gaucho, Tango, Córdoba, Aconcagua, Diego, Mateo, Valentina, and Che.
  • The big-game hunting past: Honor the breed's courageous pursuit of wild boar and puma across rugged brush with hunting names like Puma, Yaguareté, Hunter, Tracker, Ranger, and Maverick.
  • The pure white coat and muscular build: That gleaming, snow-white coat and athletic physique inspire brilliant color and strength picks like Blanco, Nieve, Perla, Snow, Frost, Blizzard, Tank, Titan, and Hercules — or Patch and Pirate for dogs with a single dark eye patch.
  • Loyal, protective and courageous character: Dogos are fearless in defense yet gentle and devoted with their families, inspiring noble guardian names like Shield, Sentinel, Warden, and Fortress.

Bold, simple one- or two-syllable names suit a large, powerful dog best. A strong name should still be easy and natural to say in a calm, friendly voice during positive daily training.

4 Tips for Naming Your Dogo Argentino

🐾

1. Pick a name that fits a confident, powerful dog

Strong names like Titan or Blanco suit the breed, and a softer nickname works for the loyal, cuddly side they show at home.

🗣️

2. Keep it short and clear

One or two syllables help a large dog respond, and a name you can say calmly and firmly works better than one you have to shout.

🚫

3. Avoid names that sound like commands

Names like "Kit" (sit) or "Beau" (no) can confuse training, which matters a lot for a strong dog like a Dogo.

⏳

4. Test it for a week

Call the name in the yard, on walks and at home. If you choose a Spanish name like Nieve or Aconcagua, practice the pronunciation so everyone says it the same way. A Dogo that turns to you right away has found the right name.
