About the Finnish Lapphund: Lapland's Gentle Reindeer Herder

📜

Lapland Heritage & Sami Reindeer Herding

The Finnish Lapphund (Suomenlapinkoira, Finnish for "Finnish Lapland dog," pronounced roughly "LAP-hoond" in English) is a spitz-type herding dog from Lapland, the far north of Finland above the Arctic Circle. The AKC describes it as a tough, weatherproof reindeer herder. Its ancestors are linked to the Sami, the Indigenous people of northern Scandinavia, Finland and Russia's Kola Peninsula, who relied on these dogs to herd reindeer and guard camps. As herding methods changed, the breed declined, and in the mid-20th century Finnish enthusiasts worked to preserve it. The Finnish Lapphund is a separate breed from the Lapponian Herder, another Finnish reindeer-herding breed, and from the Swedish Lapphund. The AKC recognized it in 2011 in the Herding Group. ☁️

Weatherproof Double Coat & Gentle Expression

About 16–21 inches tall (males are taller) and roughly 33–53 lbs, with a sturdy, medium-sized build. The long, thick, weatherproof double coat stands off the body with a full ruff around the neck, and the plumed tail curls over the back. Any color is allowed, but one color should dominate, and the most common are black, wolf sable, red and cream, often with lighter markings on the face, chest and legs. The ears are erect and the dark eyes give a soft, gentle expression. The coat sheds heavily once or twice a year and needs regular brushing.

😊

Friendly, Empathetic & Chatty Nature

Friendly, gentle, calm and alert. The AKC calls the breed remarkably empathetic and among the friendliest of all dogs, once it is satisfied that a visitor is no threat. Lapphunds are devoted to their family, good with children and eager to please. They were bred to herd reindeer with their voices, so they can be chatty and barky. They need daily exercise, company, early socialization and consistent, positive training, and they do not like being left alone for long.

How Do You Name a Finnish Lapphund? Start With Lapland and the Arctic

Naming your Finnish Lapphund connects you directly with Finland's Arctic wilderness, Sami folklore, and the rugged, heartwarming life of reindeer herders north of the Arctic Circle. Four authentic naming directions reflect their remarkable character:

  • Finnish names and language: From mythical heroes of Finland's national epic Kalevala (Väinö, Tapio, Ukko, Ilmari) to everyday Finnish favorites (Onni, Aino, Eero, Mikko, Toivo, Helmi), Finnish names carry distinct charm and lyrical beauty.
  • Lapland and reindeer-herding life: Celebrate subarctic wilderness, snow, dancing northern lights, and tundra wildlife with monikers such as Lappi, Poro, Revontuli, Revo, Susi, Karhu, and Kettu.
  • Thick, weatherproof double coat: Celebrate their stand-off fur in black, wolf sable, red, and cream with visual names like Fluff, Fuzz, Cloud, Plush, Teddy, Onyx, Wolf, Smokey, Rusty, and Copper.
  • Friendly, empathetic personality and sisu: Capture their open-mouthed smile, intuitive empathy, talkative herding voice, and legendary Finnish "sisu" (grit) with names like Sunny, Smiley, Joy, Comfort, Chatty, Echo, and Sisu.

Expert Tip: Short, bright one- or two-syllable names like Lumi, Onni, or Aino suit a gentle, responsive herder best. If you choose a longer heritage name like Suomenlapinkoira or Väinämöinen, choose a practical everyday short form such as Lappi, Revo, or Väinö for cheerful recall in the yard.

4 Tips for Naming Your Finnish Lapphund

❄️

1. Lean into the Arctic and Finnish theme

Names like Lumi, Tuuli and Sisu nod to Lapland's snow, wind and grit, and a longer name like Ilmari works well with a short nickname for everyday use.

🦌

2. Plan for the chatty, sensitive herding streak

Lapphunds were bred to herd with their voices and are gentle and sensitive, so choose a clear, distinct name you can say in a calm, cheerful voice and pair it with consistent, positive, reward-based training, plus early practice with quiet time.

🚫

3. Avoid names that sound like commands

Names like "Kit" (sit) or "Beau" (no) can confuse training during daily routines and recall exercises.

⏳

4. Test it for a week

Call the name in the yard, on walks and at home. If you choose a Finnish name, practice the pronunciation so everyone says it the same way. A Lappie that trots over with a smile has found the right name.
