About the Irish Red and White Setter: Ireland's Original Patchwork Gundog

📜

Irish Moors, Bogs & Revival

🏛️ Older Than Solid Red · 1944 Club
☘️ Ancient Irish Moor Flusher🦅 Bird "Setter" & Pointer🏆 2009 AKC Recognition

The Irish Red and White Setter is a gundog from Ireland, bred to find and "set" (crouch or freeze near) game birds such as grouse and pheasant on Irish moors and bogs, so the hunter could approach. Red-and-white setters are generally considered older than the solid-red Irish Setter and were the more common setter type in Ireland for centuries. In the 1800s, solid red became fashionable, and the red-and-white dogs nearly vanished. In the early 20th century a few dedicated breeders, with Reverend Noble Huston often credited, worked to revive the breed, and an Irish Red and White Setter Club was founded in 1944. The AKC recognized the breed in 2009 (Sporting Group).

Red Patches, White Coat & Silky Feathering

❤️ Patchwork Gundog
📏 23–26 inches⚖️ 40–60 lbs🥛 White with Red Patches✨ Red Ticking Flecks

Often called "Red and White Setter" and "Irish Red and White." It is a separate breed from the solid-red Irish Setter. About 23–26 inches tall and roughly 40–60 lbs, with a strong, athletic build that is a little stockier than the Irish Setter. The silky coat is mainly white with solid red patches, and red flecking (ticking) on the face, feet and lower legs. Feathering falls from the ears, chest, legs and tail. Eyes are dark hazel to dark brown. The coat needs regular brushing, and the long ears need regular cleaning.

They need lots of daily exercise, plenty of company and consistent, positive training, and can be noisy and boisterous indoors if under-exercised.

Naming your Irish Red and White Setter invites you to draw from four inspiring, authentic directions rooted in the breed's native heritage:

  • Irish and Celtic names, places and legends: Explore legendary Celtic counties, scenic rivers, ancient folklore, and Gaelic heroes and fair maidens, such as Finn, Maeve, Rory, Cian, and Tara.
  • Gundog life on the moors, bogs and fields: Honor their tireless working heritage across rugged landscapes, from grouse and snipe to heather, mist, Ranger, and Scout.
  • The striking red-and-white patchwork coat: Celebrate their bold crimson patches and pristine white base, drawing from vivid shades like Poppy, Ruby, Ember, and delicious combinations like Strawberries and Cream.

4 Tips for Naming Your Irish Red and White Setter

⚡

1. Keep it short and bright

One or two syllables with a clear vowel sound are easiest for an excitable, nose-led gundog to catch, even when it is busy chasing a scent.

🧠

2. Plan for the headstrong, slow-to-mature streak

Irish Red and White Setters are clever but can stay puppy-like for years, so choose a clear, distinct name you can say in a cheerful voice and pair it with consistent, positive, reward-based training.

🚫

3. Avoid names that sound like commands

Names like 'Kit' (sit) or 'Beau' (no) can confuse training.

⏳

4. Test it for a week

Call the name in the yard, at the park and at home. Setters follow their noses, so practice recall with treats in a safe, fenced area. If you choose an Irish name like Niamh or Cian, practice the pronunciation so everyone says it the same way. A Setter that bounds over with a wagging feathered tail has found the right name.
