About the Irish Water Spaniel: Ireland's Curly, Clownish Water Retriever
Ancient Origins & Justin McCarthy's Foundation
The Irish Water Spaniel is one of the oldest spaniel breeds, bred in Ireland to retrieve waterfowl from rivers, lakes and bogs. Its exact ancestry is unclear, and several water-dog types are thought to have contributed. The modern breed is traced to Justin McCarthy of Dublin, whose dog Boatswain, born around 1830, is regarded as the foundation sire. The breed reached the United States in the 19th century, and the AKC recognized it in 1884 (Sporting Group).
Tallest Spaniel, Crisp Ringlets & Rat Tail
Often called "Whiptail," "Rat-Tail Spaniel," "Bog Dog," and "Shannon Spaniel." It is also often called the "clown of the spaniel world." The tallest of the spaniels, at about 21–24 inches and roughly 45–68 lbs, with a sturdy, athletic build. The dense, crisp, water-repellent coat is a rich dark liver with a purplish tint, in tight ringlets. A big topknot of long, loose curls sits on top of the head, the face is smooth, and the tail is the famous "rat tail": short, smooth and tapered, with curls only near the base. The coat sheds little but needs regular brushing and trimming. Eyes are hazel.
Clownish Charm, Water Drive & Loyalty
Playful, clownish, energetic and smart, with a strong retrieving drive and a love of water. Irish Water Spaniels are loyal and affectionate with their own family, but often reserved with strangers. They can be strong-willed and boisterous, especially as puppies. They need daily vigorous exercise, a job to keep their minds busy, early socialization and consistent, positive training.

Generate Irish Water Spaniel Names4 Tips for Naming Your Irish Water Spaniel
1. Keep it short and playful
One or two syllables with a clear vowel sound are easiest for an energetic retriever to catch, even when it is busy splashing in a pond.
2. Plan for the clownish, stubborn streak
Irish Water Spaniels are smart and strong-willed, so choose a name you can say in a cheerful voice and pair it with consistent, positive, reward-based training. Practice recall in a safe area before off-leash time near water.
3. Avoid names that sound like commands
Names like 'Kit' (sit) or 'Beau' (no) can confuse training.
4. Test it for a week
Call the name in the yard, at the park and at home. If you choose an Irish name like Niamh or Cormac, practice the pronunciation so everyone says it the same way. An Irish Water Spaniel that bounds over with a bouncing topknot has found the right name.
