Nomi per cani Basset Hound

Good Basset Hound names tend to be warm, slightly comic and a little old-fashioned — matching that mournful face and rolling gait. Duke, Otis, Winston, Daisy, Clementine and Bessie all suit the breed. French names honour their origins (Bas, Hubert, Colette), while food names like Waffles and Biscuit play to their legendary appetite.

It comes from the French word bas, meaning "low" — a direct description of the breed's short, heavy-boned legs. Those legs are the result of achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism deliberately bred in so that hunters on foot could keep pace with the hound as it worked a scent trail.

Male Bassets suit sturdy, dignified names that offset their comic proportions: Duke, Otis, Winston, Chester, Bruno, Gus and Moose all work. Elvis is a favourite nod to "Hound Dog", and Sherlock or Gascon suit a boy who follows his nose everywhere.

Female Bassets carry sweet, homely names beautifully — Daisy, Molly, Bessie, Sadie, Willow and Dixie are all popular. Clementine and Lemon suit a lemon and white girl, while Trudy fits a hound with a truly stubborn streak.

Tricolour Bassets carry black, white and tan, so patchwork names fit well: Domino, Oreo, Patch, Bandit and Cookie all reference the markings. For lemon and white dogs try Lemon, Biscuit or Honey; for red and white, Copper or Penny.

They hear you perfectly — they simply weigh their options. Bassets are scent-driven and famously stubborn, so once a trail takes their attention, recall gets difficult. Keep the name to one or two syllables with a strong opening consonant, and always pair it with something worth coming back for.
