They share Spitz-type ancestry but aren't directly descended from Samoyeds. The Japanese Spitz was developed in the 1920s-30s Japan from German Spitz dogs, with possible Samoyed influence. They're essentially a miniaturized white Spitz perfected in Japan.

Japanese Spitz typically live 12-14 years. They're a generally healthy breed with few genetic issues, making them one of the more robust small companion breeds.

Their upturned mouth line and dark, expressive eyes create a natural 'smile.' This facial structure — combined with their bright, alert expression — gives them a perpetually cheerful appearance that's a hallmark of the breed.
