About the Keeshond: The Smiling Dutch Barge Dog

The Keeshond (plural Keeshonden, pronounced "KAYS-hawnd") is a spitz-type breed from the Netherlands. For centuries these dogs rode on barges and farm boats along Dutch canals and rivers as watchdogs and companions. In the late 1700s the breed became a symbol of the Dutch Patriot political movement, and the name is commonly traced to Kees de Gyselaer, a Patriot leader whose dog was called Kees ("Keeshond" means "Kees's dog"). After the Patriots lost power the breed fell out of fashion, but barge families kept it going, and Dutch breeders began preserving it in the early 1920s. The AKC recognized the Keeshond in 1930 (Non-Sporting Group).

Nicknamed "Dutch Barge Dog" and "Smiling Dutchman." About 17–18 inches tall and roughly 35–45 lbs. The plush double coat is a mix of gray, black and cream, with a thick ruff or "mane" around the neck, feathered "trousers" on the hind legs and a plumed tail curled over the back. The signature feature is the "spectacles": fine dark lines running from the outer corner of each eye toward the ear, framed by a dark muzzle and small, pointed ears.

Friendly, lively, outgoing and affectionate, with a smart, clownish streak. Keeshonden are strongly bonded "velcro" companions and alert watchdogs that will bark to announce visitors, but they are not aggressive. They are sensitive to tone, learn quickly with positive training, and do not like being left alone for long.

4 Tips for Naming Your Keeshond

🌷

1. Keep it short and cheerful

One or two syllables with a bright, clear sound are easiest for a quick-learning, social spitz to pick up.

🗣️

2. Choose a name you love saying warmly

Keeshonden are sensitive to tone and respond best to happy, upbeat voices, so pick a name you can call out with a smile.

🚫

3. Avoid names that sound like commands

Names like 'Kit' (sit) or 'Beau' (no) can confuse training.

⏳

4. Test it for a week

Call the name in the yard, at the park and at home. If you choose a Dutch name like Kees or Daan, practice the pronunciation so everyone says it the same way. A Keeshond that trots over with its famous smile has found the right name.
