About the Lowchen: The Little Lion of European Courts

📜

Continental Courts & Renaissance Art

The Löwchen (spelled Lowchen in English, pronounced roughly "LERV-khen") is a toy-sized companion breed whose name is German for "little lion." It belongs to the Bichon family of small, fluffy European companion dogs. Its exact homeland is debated, with Germany, France, Italy and the wider Mediterranean all put forward. What is clear is that it has been a favorite pet of Continental Europeans for more than 500 years, and small dogs with lion-clipped coats appear in European art from the Renaissance onward. Their job was to be a loyal, lively companion for noble and wealthy families. In the 20th century the breed fell so low in numbers that it nearly disappeared. Belgian breeder Madame Bennert is commonly credited with leading its revival, and in 1973 the Guinness Book of Records listed it as one of the rarest dog breeds in the world. The AKC recognized the breed in 1999 in the Non-Sporting Group. Source: AKC Löwchen breed page.

🦁

Appearance & The Lion Clip

About 10–13 inches tall and roughly 9–18 lbs, with a sturdy, compact, well-balanced body. The long, soft, wavy, silky coat comes in any color or combination, including white, black, cream, gold, gray, chocolate and parti-colors. The signature look is the traditional lion clip: the hindquarters, hind legs and most of the tail are clipped short, leaving a full mane, feathered front legs and a plume at the tip of the tail. Dark, round eyes and drop ears give a bright, alert face. The breed sheds very little but needs regular brushing and grooming, with or without the lion clip.

💖

Temperament & Big-Dog Heart

Affectionate, lively, intelligent and brave, a small dog with a big, confident personality. Lowchens are people-focused, playful and good with children and other pets when well socialized. They are alert and will bark to announce visitors, adapt well to apartments and need only moderate exercise, but they do not like being left alone for long. They can be stubborn at times, so they do best with early socialization and consistent, positive training.

How Do You Name a Lowchen? Start With the Little Lion

Naming your Lowchen is an inspiring journey that connects centuries of European companion heritage with your puppy's individual character. Four authentic naming directions reflect the essence of this distinctive breed:

  • Lion names and words across world languages: Because the breed's very name means "little lion," celebrating the king-of-beasts theme is a natural fit. Look to classics like Leo, Leon, Lionel, Leona, Leonard, and Leonidas, or exotic translations like Aslan (Turkish) and Simba (Swahili).
  • European courts and noble families: As cherished lap warmers for kings, queens, and Continental nobility for more than 500 years, royal French and German names—such as Louis, Leopold, Albert, Henri, Colette, and Josephine—ring with aristocratic distinction.
  • The traditional lion clip and silky wavy coat: Pay homage to their groomed silhouette featuring a thick chest mane, fluffy tail plume, and velvety hindquarters with names like Mane, Plume, Tuft, Ruff, Silk, Velvet, and Satin.
  • Brave, playful, and affectionate temperament: Capture their courageous big-dog attitude paired with Velcro lap cuddles through spirited picks like Brave, Lionheart, Bounce, Sunny, Zippy, Cuddles, and Snuggles.

Expert Tip: Short, bright one- or two-syllable names suit a lively toy dog best. If you fall in love with an elaborate royal moniker like Leopold, Leonidas, or Marguerite, establish a crisp daily nickname like Leo, Leo, or Maggie for instant recall during walks and positive training.

4 Tips for Naming Your Lowchen

🦁

1. Lean into the little-lion theme

Names like Leo, Leona or Lionel nod directly to the breed's own name, and a royal moniker like Leopold works wonderfully with a short nickname like Leo for everyday use.

👑

2. Plan for the confident, sometimes stubborn streak

Lowchens have a big-dog attitude in a compact body, so choose a clear, distinct name you can say in a cheerful voice and pair it with consistent, positive, reward-based training from puppyhood.

🚫

3. Avoid names that sound like commands

Names like "Kit" (sit) or "Beau" (no) can confuse your dog during obedience drills and everyday household routines.

⏳

4. Test it for a week

Call the name in the house, in the yard and on daily walks. Small companion dogs often respond best to a happy, higher-pitched voice. If you choose a German or French name, practice the pronunciation so the entire family says it the same way. A Lowchen that perks up and trots over has found the right name.
