About the Manchester Terrier: England's Sleek Black-and-Tan Ratter
1800s Manchester Mills & John Hulme's Cross
The Manchester Terrier comes from the city of Manchester in northwest England, where it was developed in the 1800s as a rat catcher for the city's busy mills, warehouses and homes. Black-and-tan terriers had hunted vermin in England for centuries, and the breeder John Hulme is commonly credited with crossing a Whippet with a black-and-tan terrier in the early 1800s to add speed and a sleeker build. The result could kill rats with ease and also course rabbits. The breed was long known as the Black and Tan Terrier. The AKC recognized the Manchester Terrier in 1886, and today it is registered in two varieties: the Standard (Terrier Group) and the Toy (Toy Group). It remains a fairly uncommon breed.
Jet-Black Coat & Rich Mahogany-Tan Points
The Standard is about 15–16 inches tall and roughly 12–22 lbs, and the Toy is about 10–12 inches tall and under 12 lbs. Both have a sleek, muscular, racy build. The short, smooth, glossy coat is jet black with rich mahogany-tan markings: small tan spots above each eye and on the cheeks, a tan muzzle, throat, chest and legs, and tan under the tail. Many dogs also show black "thumbprint" marks on the front of the legs and black "pencil" lines on the toes. Eyes are small, dark and almond-shaped, and the ears are small and either button-shaped or erect. The coat is very low-maintenance and needs only a quick brushing.
Spirited Ratter's Heart & Devoted Companion
Alert, lively, intelligent and devoted, with a spirited terrier personality. Manchester Terriers bond closely with their family, love to be near their people and make quick-to-warn watchdogs. They are athletic and playful, with a strong prey drive and ratting instincts that make them chase squirrels, mice and anything small and fast. They can be reserved with strangers, stubborn, and noisy or destructive when bored or left alone. They need daily exercise, plenty of company, early socialization and consistent, positive training. The Toy variety is delicate and needs gentle handling.

Generate Manchester Terrier Names4 Tips for Naming Your Manchester Terrier
1. Keep it short and crisp
One or two syllables with a clear, sharp sound are easiest for a quick, alert terrier to catch, even when it is busy chasing something. If you love a longer name like Emmeline, shorten it to a nickname like Emmy for everyday use.
2. Plan for the stubborn, sharp-minded streak
Manchester Terriers think for themselves and have a strong prey drive, so choose a clear, distinct name and pair it with consistent, positive, reward-based training. Use a secure fence and a leash around squirrels and small animals rather than relying on recall alone.
3. Avoid names that sound like commands
Names like "Kit" (sit) or "Beau" (no) can confuse training.
4. Test it for a week
Call the name in the house, in the yard and on walks. Tiny dogs, especially the Toy variety, often respond best to a happy, higher-pitched voice. A Manchester Terrier that snaps to attention and trots over has found the right name.
