About the Sussex Spaniel: England's Rare, Golden-Liver Voice of the Woods

📜

Sussex Countryside & Rosehill Legacy

🏛️ 1884 AKC · 2009 Westminster
🌲 Dense Woods & Brambles🗣️ "Gives Tongue" Vocal Flusher🏆 Legend Champion Stump

The Sussex Spaniel comes from the county of Sussex in southeast England. In the late 1700s and 1800s, local breeders, most famously Augustus Elliott Fuller, who is commonly said to have kept his dogs at Rosehill near Hastings, developed a low, sturdy spaniel to flush game from the thick brambles, woods and undergrowth of the Sussex countryside. Most spaniels work quietly, but the Sussex "gives tongue," meaning it barks as it follows a scent, so hunters on foot could keep track of it in dense cover. It was one of the early breeds recognized by the AKC, in 1884 (Sporting Group). Numbers dropped sharply during the World Wars, and it remains one of the rarer spaniels. In 2009 a Sussex Spaniel named Stump won Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, at age 10, and became the oldest winner of the title.

The silky, flat to slightly wavy coat is a rich golden liver, with golden hair tips that give it a glowing shimmer, and it has feathering on the legs, ears and tail. The head is large, the eyes are hazel, and the face has a thoughtful, frowning expression. Ears are long and low-set. The coat needs regular brushing, and the long ears need regular cleaning.

How Do You Name a Sussex Spaniel? Start With the Sussex Countryside

Naming your Sussex Spaniel is an invitation to explore several rich, authentic avenues rooted directly in the breed's heritage:

  • Sussex and English countryside names, places and hunting life: Draw upon historic woodlands, dense brambles, coastal towns, and historic country estates like Rosehill, Hastings, Fuller, and Bramble.
  • Classic British names that suit a gentle, old-fashioned breed: Traditional names like Winston, Barnaby, Chester, Archie, Rupert, and Alfie fit their noble, vintage British sporting spirit.
  • The golden-liver coat: Celebrate their one-of-a-kind color shade with warm culinary and autumnal hues, from Honey, Marmalade and Toffee to Maple, Acorn and Chestnut.
  • The breed's solemn face, cheerful heart and famous voice: Honor the comical juxtaposition of a serious frown with a wagging tail, along with their unique woodland voice, using names like Professor, Jester, Giggles, Bugle, Tenor and Echo.

Expert Tip: Short, warm one- or two-syllable names suit a calm, friendly spaniel best for daily recall. If you choose a longer heritage name (such as Augustus or Clementine), pair it with a crisp, affectionate short nickname like Gus or Clem.

4 Tips for Naming Your Sussex Spaniel

🍯

1. Pick a name that suits a cheerful, laid-back dog

Warm, friendly names like Gus or Honey match the breed's easygoing charm, and a longer heritage name like Augustus works well with a short nickname.

🧠

2. Plan for the stubborn, slow-and-steady streak

Sussex Spaniels are loving but can be strong-willed and slow to mature, so choose a clear, distinct name and pair it with patient, consistent, reward-based training.

🚫

3. Avoid names that sound like commands

Names like 'Kit' (sit) or 'Beau' (no) can confuse training.

⏳

4. Test it for a week

Call the name in the yard, on walks and at home. Sussex Spaniels love to follow their noses, so practice recall with treats in a safe, fenced area. A Sussex that lifts its head with a wagging tail has found the right name.
