About the Norwegian Lundehund: The Six-Toed Puffin Dog of Norway
Lofoten Islands & Puffin Hunting
The Norwegian Lundehund (Norsk Lundehund, Norwegian for "Norwegian puffin dog," pronounced roughly "LUN-deh-hoond") comes from Norway's rocky Lofoten islands, above the Arctic Circle, where it was bred over centuries to hunt puffins on sea cliffs. The AKC points to the island of Værøy and calls it the only dog breed created for the job of puffin hunting. The dogs climbed narrow cliff ledges and squeezed into burrows to reach the birds, which were a valuable resource for island families. When puffins became a protected species and the hunting tradition faded, the breed's job disappeared. The Lundehund came close to extinction in the 20th century, and a small group of Norwegian breeders saved it. It remains one of the rarest dog breeds in the world. The AKC recognized it in 2011 in the Non-Sporting Group. Source: AKC Norwegian Lundehund breed page.
Anatomy: Six Toes & Foldable Ears
About 12–15 inches tall and roughly 13–16 lbs, a small, sturdy, rectangular spitz-type dog. The dense double coat is usually reddish-brown or fawn with black-tipped hairs and white markings, though black, gray and white combinations also occur. The ears are erect and triangular. The breed is famous for its unusual build: six toes on each foot, a very flexible neck that can bend back to touch the spine, front legs that can stretch out to the sides, and ears that can fold shut. These features helped it grip cliffs and squeeze through narrow gaps.
Temperament: Friendly, Curious & Athletic
Friendly, lively, curious and athletic, with a playful streak. The AKC calls today's Lundehund a friendly, athletic companion. Lundehunds are alert watchdogs that can be vocal, they may be wary of strangers, and they are excellent climbers. They need daily exercise and mental games, secure fencing, early socialization and patient, consistent, positive training.

How Do You Name a Norwegian Lundehund? Start With the Puffin Cliffs of Lofoten
Naming your Norwegian Lundehund is an exciting journey into Arctic Norway's coastal lore, Viking mythology, and the breed's extraordinary physical superpowers. Four authentic naming directions reflect their remarkable character:
- Puffin, cliff, and island names: Because "Lundehund" literally translates to puffin dog, names celebrating their native habitat—such as Lunde, Puffin, Fjord, Lofoten, Værøy, Røst, Ledge, and Skerry—are deeply meaningful.
- Norwegian and Old Norse heritage: From majestic Norse gods and heroes (Odin, Thor, Freya, Balder, Skadi, Leif) to beloved traditional Scandinavian names (Magnus, Ingrid, Sigrid, Astrid, Solveig, Bjørn, Liv), these names honor ancient northern history.
- Unique anatomical features: Celebrate their six toes per paw, hyper-flexible joints, and ears that fold tightly shut to block water and dirt with names like Six, Sixer, Digit, Acrobat, Flip, Yogi, Radar, and Pixie.
- Playful, athletic, and vocal personality: Capture their perky curiosity, cliff-scaling acrobatics, and spirited alarms with lively picks like Spider, Gecko, Ninja, Zippy, Dash, Bounce, Echo, and Sentry.
Expert Tip: Short, bright one- or two-syllable names suit a quick, curious climber best. If you choose a longer Norse or Norwegian name like Fridtjof, Torvald, or Ragnhild, establish a short everyday nickname like Fritz, Tor, or Ragna for swift recall on trails and agility courses.

Generate Norwegian Lundehund Names4 Tips for Naming Your Norwegian Lundehund
1. Pick a name that fits an acrobat
Names like Lunde, Puffin or Fjord nod directly to the breed's cliff-climbing past, and a longer heritage name like Fridtjof works well with a short nickname for everyday use.
2. Plan for the curious, athletic streak
Lundehunds are lively climbers that can get into places you would not expect, so choose a clear, distinct name you can say in a cheerful voice and pair it with patient, consistent, positive, reward-based training and secure fencing.
3. Avoid names that sound like commands
Names like "Kit" (sit) or "Beau" (no) can confuse your dog during recall drills and daily household training.
4. Test it for a week
Call the name in the yard, on walks and at home. If you choose a Norwegian or Old Norse name, practice the pronunciation so everyone says it the same way. A Lundehund that bounces over with perked-up ears has found the right name.
