About the Spanish Water Dog: Spain's Curly, Hardworking Farm and Water Dog

📜

Ancient Origins & Working Lineage

🏛️ 1999 FCI · 2015 AKC
🌊 Waterfowl Retriever🐑 All-Purpose Farm Herder⚓ Maritime Helper

The Spanish Water Dog (Perro de Agua Español) is an old Spanish breed that worked as an all-purpose farm and water dog. In southern Spain it herded sheep, goats and cattle, and elsewhere it helped fishermen and hunters by retrieving gear and waterfowl from the water. A popular but uncertain story says the breed's ancestors arrived in Spain with Turkish traders or sailors. By the 20th century the traditional working dogs were becoming rare, and Spanish breeders worked in the 1970s and 1980s to preserve the breed and write its standard. The FCI recognized the breed in 1999, and the AKC recognized it in 2015 (Herding Group).

Appearance & Signature Corded Coat

✂️ Low Shedding
📏 16–20 inches⚖️ 31–49 lbs🧶 Natural Cords🎨 Black, Brown, White & Parti

Often called "Perro de Agua Español" (Spanish for "Spanish water dog"), "SWD," and the older name "Spanish Water Spaniel." About 16–20 inches tall and roughly 31–49 lbs, with a sturdy, athletic, medium-sized build. The dense, woolly, curly coat forms natural cords if left unbrushed, and is usually clipped to a short, even "lamb" length once or twice a year. Colors include solid black, white, brown (chocolate), beige and parti-colors such as black and white or brown and white. Many dogs have a natural short tail or bobtail. The coat sheds very little but needs regular care.

🧠

Temperament, Intellect & Drive

⚡ High Intelligence
❤️ Family Devoted🛡️ Alert Watchdog🏊 Passionate Swimmer🎯 Agility & Scent Work

Intelligent, hardworking, loyal and eager to please, with strong herding and retrieving instincts. Spanish Water Dogs are affectionate and devoted to their own family but wary of strangers, and they are alert and happy to bark when something seems off. They love water, need daily exercise and a job to keep their minds busy, and they may try to herd children or other pets. They are sensitive, so they need early socialization and consistent, positive training. They excel in herding, agility, obedience and scent work.

4 Tips for Naming Your Spanish Water Dog

⚡

1. Keep it short and bright

One or two syllables with a clear vowel sound are easiest for a quick, alert herding dog to pick up, even when it is busy splashing in the water.

🧠

2. Plan for the working mind

Spanish Water Dogs are smart, sensitive and strong-willed, so choose a name you can say in a cheerful, steady voice and pair it with consistent, positive, reward-based training and plenty of mental jobs.

🚫

3. Avoid names that sound like commands

Names like 'Kit' (sit) or 'Beau' (no) can confuse training for a dog that reads every sound closely.

⏳

4. Test it for a week

Call the name in the yard, at the park and at home. If you choose a Spanish name like Marisol or Mateo, practice the pronunciation so everyone says it the same way. A Spanish Water Dog that comes bounding over with a wiggling curly coat has found the right name.
