🍄 Lagotto Romagnolo Name Generator

The best Lagotto Romagnolo names reflect their Italian heritage and truffle-hunting talents. Italian names like Tartufo (truffle), Rocco, Bella, and Gioia (joy) honour their Romagnolo roots. Truffle and mushroom-inspired names like Porcini, Bosco (woodland), and Truffle celebrate their unique working purpose. Their adorable curly coat also inspires sweet names like Dolce (sweet) and Bambi.

The Lagotto Romagnolo is the world's only breed specifically bred and recognised for truffle hunting. Originally a water retriever in the marshlands of Romagna in northeastern Italy, the breed transitioned to truffle hunting when the marshes were drained in the late 19th century. Their extraordinary sense of smell and compact, tireless build make them perfect for locating truffles underground. They are also prized as affectionate, hypoallergenic family companions.

Yes, Lagotti Romagnoli are considered a hypoallergenic breed. Their dense, tightly curled coat is hair-like rather than fur-like, which means it grows continuously and sheds minimally. This produces far fewer airborne allergens than most breeds. However, no dog is truly 100% hypoallergenic — all dogs produce some level of dander and saliva proteins that can trigger allergies. Regular grooming helps minimise allergens further.

Lagotto Romagnoli are medium-small dogs. Males typically stand 17-19 inches at the shoulder and weigh 28-35 pounds. Females are 16-18 inches and 24-31 pounds. They are sturdy and well-proportioned, with a square build that gives them a robust appearance despite their moderate size. Their dense curly coat can make them appear larger than they actually are.

Lagotti are intelligent, eager to please, and generally very trainable. They respond well to positive reinforcement and enjoy learning new tasks — their working heritage as truffle hunters means they thrive on having a job to do. They can be slightly independent at times, but they are far more biddable than many terrier breeds. Nose work, scent games, and puzzle toys are excellent training activities for this breed.

Lagotti can be moderate barkers. They are naturally alert and may bark to notify you of visitors or unusual sounds. Some individuals develop a habit of barking during excitement or play. Early training to manage barking is recommended. They are not as vocal as many terrier breeds, but they are more expressive than some other companion breeds.

Lagotti need moderate exercise — about 45-60 minutes daily. They enjoy walks, swimming, and especially scent work or nose games. They are not as high-energy as Pointers or Border Collies, but they do need regular physical and mental stimulation. Truffle hunting, tracking exercises, or hide-and-seek games are ideal activities that satisfy both their body and their exceptional nose.

Generally yes, Lagotti Romagnoli are sociable dogs that get along well with other dogs when properly socialised. They are not typically dominant or aggressive. Early socialisation with a variety of dogs helps ensure good social skills. Some Lagotti can be reserved with unfamiliar dogs initially but warm up quickly. They often do well in multi-dog households.

Lagotti need regular grooming to maintain their curly coat. The coat should be clipped short every few months and brushed regularly to prevent matting. Many owners keep the coat at about 1-1.5 inches long for easy maintenance. The ears need particular attention as their hairy ear canals can trap moisture and lead to infections. Professional grooming every 6-8 weeks is common.

Lagotti Romagnoli are still relatively uncommon outside of Italy, though their popularity has grown significantly since the breed was recognised by the AKC in 2015. They are no longer rare, but you will likely need to seek out a reputable breeder rather than finding one at a shelter. Expect waiting lists from responsible breeders. In Italy, particularly in the Romagna region, they are much more common.
