About the Redbone Coonhound: The Fiery-Red Voice of the American South

๐Ÿ›๏ธ 1902 UKC ยท 2009 AKC Hound
๐ŸŒฒ Cold-Nosed Trail Hound๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Treeing Quarry Bay๐Ÿป Bear & Cougar Hunter

The Redbone Coonhound was developed in the Southern United States as a hunting hound. Its roots trace to red foxhounds brought to America by Scottish settlers in the late 1700s, later blended with Irish hounds and other hound types, including the Bloodhound, to create a fast, cold-nosed trailing dog. The name is commonly said to honor an early breeder named Peter Redbone, and it also fits the dog's color. Redbones hunt by following a scent trail and "treeing" their quarry, which means barking at the base of the tree where the animal has climbed. Originally prized for raccoon, they have also been used on larger game such as bear, cougar and wild boar. They are strong swimmers and tough dogs in rough, swampy country. The UKC recognized the breed in 1902, and the AKC recognized it in 2009 (Hound Group).

How Do You Name a Redbone Coonhound? Start With the Southern Woods and Bayou

Naming your Redbone Coonhound is a wonderful opportunity to draw from four authentic avenues celebrating the breed's heritage:

  • Southern and Appalachian names, places and traditions: Draw inspiration from bayous, blooming magnolias, scenic mountain ridges, front porches, and sweet tea with names like Boone, Hank, Dixie, Magnolia, and Georgia.
  • Hunting life and timber trails: Honor their prowess on night hunts, cold trails, treeing raccoons, and tracking bear with names like Ranger, Trapper, Scout, Hunter, and Old Dan.
  • The fiery red coat: Celebrate their gleaming, rich red fleece with vivid colors, precious gems, and spices, from Copper, Ruby, and Ember to Cayenne, Cinnamon, and Paprika.

4 Tips for Naming Your Redbone Coonhound

๐Ÿ“ข

1. Keep it short and carrying

One- or two-syllable names with hard vowels and consonants carry best through thick woods, pine groves, and swamps when calling your hound across a distance.

๐Ÿ‘ƒ

2. Plan for the scent-locked streak

Once a Redbone catches a scent, their ears essentially turn off. Choose a crisp, distinct name and pair recall training with high-value rewards in safe, securely fenced areas.

๐Ÿšซ

3. Avoid names that rhyme with commands

Names like 'Bo' (sounds like 'No') or 'Ray' (sounds like 'Stay') can confuse training both in the field and around the home.

โณ

4. Test it across the field or porch

Shout the name aloud outdoors several times. A hound that perks its long ears, lifts its nose from the trail, and bounds back with a merry bay has found the right name.
