🔵 Bluetick Coonhound Name Generator

Great Bluetick Coonhound names lean into their distinctive blue-ticked coat, Southern heritage, and hunting prowess. Popular picks include Blue, Smokey, Midnight, Hank, and Gunner for males; Dixie, Sadie, Magnolia, Jolene, and Pearl for females. Colour-inspired names like Indigo, Cobalt, and Slate celebrate their unique markings.

The name comes from their distinctive coat pattern — a dark blue mottled 'ticking' (tiny spots of colour on a white background) that gives the coat an overall blue-black appearance. The effect looks like a dark night sky, making them one of the most visually striking hound breeds.

Blueticks are loyal, affectionate, and great with children. They bond deeply with their families and are gentle at home. However, they need significant exercise, have a very loud bawling bay, are stubborn and scent-driven, and need secure fencing — they will follow a trail for miles if given the opportunity.

Extremely loud — their deep, drawn-out bawling bay is one of the most powerful in the hound world, designed to carry across miles of dense forest so hunters could locate the pack. This is a breed that will bay at raccoons, squirrels, interesting smells, and sometimes the moon. Not ideal for apartments or close neighbours.

A 'cold nose' means the hound can follow old, fading scent trails — sometimes hours or even days old. Bluetick Coonhounds are among the best cold-nosed hounds, able to pick up and patiently work ancient trails that hotter-nosed breeds would miss entirely.

The most famous Bluetick Coonhound is Smokey, the University of Tennessee's live mascot since 1953. The current Smokey continues the tradition of being a purebred Bluetick Coonhound who leads the Volunteers onto the football field. Tennessee even declared the Bluetick their official state dog.

At least 1-2 hours of vigorous exercise daily. Blueticks were bred to trail raccoons through swamps and mountains all night long. They need long hikes, runs, and scent work to stay happy. A bored, under-exercised Bluetick will bay constantly and become destructive.
