The Icelandic Sheepdog, called the Íslenskur fjárhundur in its native tongue, is the only dog breed native to Iceland. Norse settlers brought its ancestors across the North Atlantic when they first colonized Iceland around 874 AD. Closely related to the Norwegian Buhund and genetically linked to the Finnish Karelian Bear Dog, the breed was bred specifically for herding sheep, cattle, and horses, as well as guarding newborn lambs against predatory raptors — a responsibility that shaped its famously alert, vocal temperament.

The breed nearly faced extinction twice. A devastating canine distemper epidemic in the late 1800s wiped out approximately 75% of Iceland's dogs, prompting the country to ban dog imports in 1901. By the 1950s, an estimated 50 purebred Icelandic Sheepdogs remained. American archaeologist Mark Watson, who had traveled Iceland in the 1930s, launched dedicated rescue and breeding efforts in the 1950s, publishing landmark research in 1956. In 1969, the Icelandic Kennel Club (Hundaræktarfélag Íslands, or HRFÍ) was formed to protect the breed, and in 1994 Iceland's parliament declared the Icelandic Sheepdog an official part of the national cultural heritage.

The breed was officially recognized by the FCI in 1972 (FCI Standard No. 289) and by the American Kennel Club in 2010, where it belongs to the Herding Group.

Given their ancient Norse and Icelandic heritage, two naming approaches are especially fitting: authentic Icelandic vocabulary (reflecting the volcanic landscapes of fire and ice), and iconic Norse mythology figures that accompanied the Vikings who settled Iceland. The sections below highlight top selections across both categories, alongside coat- and personality-based ideas.
