The Borzoi is a Russian sighthound, and its name is simply the Russian word for what it does — borzyi, meaning swift. English speakers called it the Russian Wolfhound until 1936, which described the job precisely: from the seventeenth century onward the Russian aristocracy bred these dogs to course wolves across open steppe, slipped in trios so that two hounds could hold a wolf by the neck until the mounted hunter arrived.
