The Scottish Deerhound is the "Royal Dog of Scotland" — an ancient, noble sighthound that once coursed red deer across the Highland moors for Scottish chieftains and kings. Standing 28-32 inches tall with a rough, wiry blue-grey coat, they look like a Greyhound who spent a year hiking through the Scottish Highlands and grew a magnificent beard along the way. The breed is so old that its exact origins are unknown, but Deerhound-type dogs appear in Scottish and Pictish art dating back to the 3rd century. In medieval Scotland, ownership was restricted to nobility of the rank of earl or above — the breed was so prized that a condemned nobleman could literally buy his life with a brace of Deerhounds. Wars were fought over them. Despite their hunting heritage, Scottish Deerhounds are famously gentle, dignified, and sweet-natured — often described as "the most perfect creature" by their devoted owners. At home, they're quiet, calm, and almost regal in their composure, happy to spend hours draped across a sofa like a 100-pound throw blanket. They course with breathtaking power at up to 35 mph, then come home and become the world's largest lap dogs. Sir Walter Scott called his Deerhound Maida "the most perfect creature of heaven" — a sentiment every Deerhound owner since has echoed.

The Scottish Deerhound's ancient Highland heritage, gentle giant temperament, and royal hunting legacy open several beautifully Scottish naming directions. Scottish Gaelic names like Angus (one strength), Fergus (man of vigour), Hamish (Scottish James), Bonnie (beautiful), and Isla (island) honour their Highland clan roots with authentic Gaelic heritage. Scottish historical names like Wallace (after William Wallace), Bruce (after Robert the Bruce), Duncan, and Flora carry centuries of Scottish history and heroism. Highland landscape names like Skye, Heather, Thistle, Rowan, Glen, and Briar evoke the misty moors and rugged mountains these dogs once coursed across. And noble, gentle names like Grace, Noble, Sage, Sterling, and Haven match their famously sweet, dignified temperament. Scottish Deerhounds are responsive and eager to please — they'll learn their name quickly and respond with gentle enthusiasm, so pick one that feels like Scotland.
